Tehran Zine

Tehran Zine was founded in 2021 by Saghi Parkhideh and Amir Moghtada and officially began its activities in 2022. The project aims to create opportunities for young Iranian artists to produce and publish zines as an established and significant medium of communication in the world of art.

One-Day Introduction to Zine-Making Workshop
An Artwork in the Form of a Booklet

In this workshop, we will focus on the process of creating a One Sheet Zine as a means of expressing an artist’s ideas and creativity. We will begin with an introduction to the history of zine-making, followed by examples of artist zines and an exploration of their place within art collections. During this part of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to closely examine zines from the Tehran Zine archive and draw inspiration from their distinctive approaches to execution and content.

In the second part of the workshop, participants will use a technique of their choice, selected in advance—such as pencil, collage, watercolor, ink, and more—to develop their ideas on a one-sheet zine. Please note that the purpose of this workshop is to experience and become familiar with the process of making a zine, rather than to complete a finished artwork within a few hours.

Tehran Zine will provide participants with a printed one-sheet zine layout template in A4, along with suitable A3 paper. Participants are expected to bring their own materials and tools for designing and producing their zine. Due to time limitations, the use of oil-based paints and solvents will not be possible.

The workshop is intended to provide guidance and feedback on participants’ individual projects. Based on your preliminary sketches, the Tehran Zine team can suggest various technical approaches for producing your future zines. This workshop is particularly recommended for those who are interested in participating in future Tehran Zine open calls.

Please note that Tehran Zine will not print participants’ artworks during this workshop. The focus is solely on the process of developing a zine, from initial design through production.

How will the workshop work?

The workshop will be held in two parts.

Part One

Introduction to Tehran Zine and its activities
An introduction to the history of zines
Viewing examples from the Tehran Zine archive
Understanding the role of zines in contemporary art
Introduction to different methods of zine-making and production
Introduction to editioning and independent publishing
Developing ideas for a one-sheet zine

During this part, participants will have the opportunity to examine examples from the Tehran Zine archive and become familiar with different approaches to the execution and content of zines.

Part Two

Participants will work on their own one-sheet zine using their preferred technique, such as pencil, collage, watercolor, ink, and more.

The purpose of this part is to experience the zine-design process and receive feedback and guidance, rather than complete a final artwork during the workshop.

The final part of the workshop will be dedicated to Q&A, reviewing sketches, and discussing the artists’ individual projects.

Workshop Facilities

Tehran Zine will provide:

Printed one-sheet zine examples
Three one-sheet zine layout templates
A selection of Tehran Zine educational zines
Suitable paper for practice

Participants are expected to bring:

Their own tools and materials
Pencils, pens, collage materials, ink, watercolor, and any other required tools

Please note:
Due to the limitations of the workshop space, the use of oil-based paints and solvent-based materials is not permitted.

Participants’ works will not be printed during this workshop. The focus is on becoming familiar with the process of designing and producing a zine, while also introducing participants to appropriate approaches for preparing and producing the final edition of their work
